8 days Lemosho route overview

The Lemosho Route is considered advantageous over other routes due to its lower traffic in the early days of the climb. While sharing some sections with the Machame Route, it offers unique views of the surrounding landscapes not visible from other parts of the mountain. The route’s remote nature and longer duration make it a more strenuous trek but also contribute to a higher success rate in reaching the summit. Most climbers spend 7 to 8 days on this trail, increasing their chances of summiting Kilimanjaro.

Kilimanjaro joining group 8 days Lemosho route : Itinerary

Day 0 : Arrival in Tanzania

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins when you arrive in Tanzania, where you will be warmly welcomed at the airport and transferred to Moshi town, the main gateway for climbers preparing to ascend Mount Kilimanjaro. As you travel through the cultivated farmland and local villages around the mountain, you will begin to feel the excitement of the journey ahead. Once you arrive at your hotel, you will have time to rest after your flight and prepare for the trek. Later in the day, you will meet your mountain guide for a full briefing about the Lemosho Route, including daily hiking conditions, altitude preparation, safety procedures, and what to expect throughout the expedition. A final gear check will also be done to ensure you have everything needed for a successful climb. This first day is mainly for rest, organization, and mental preparation before your mountain adventure begins. Overnight will be at a hotel in Moshi.

Day 1 : Day 1: Moshi to Lemosho Gate to Big Tree Camp(Mti Mkubwa)

After breakfast, you will drive from Moshi to Lemosho Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, where your climb officially begins. After completing registration and final park formalities, you will start your trek through the peaceful rainforest zone toward Mti Mkubwa Camp. This first hiking day is relatively gentle and gives you a comfortable introduction to the mountain while allowing your body to begin adjusting to the altitude. The trail passes through lush forest filled with rich birdlife, towering trees, thick green vegetation, and the sounds of nature all around you. Along the way, you may also spot some wildlife, including monkeys or other small forest animals hidden among the trees. The hike covers around 6 kilometers and usually takes 3 to 4 hours, making it a relaxed but scenic first day on the mountain. Upon arrival at Mti Mkubwa Camp at approximately 2,650 meters, you will settle in, enjoy dinner, and spend your first night camping on Kilimanjaro.

Day 2 Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Today you continue your climb as you gradually leave the rainforest behind and move into the open moorland zone on your way to Shira Camp 1. After breakfast, the trail begins to rise steadily through changing vegetation and increasingly open terrain, offering a beautiful transition between ecological zones. As the forest thins out, you will begin to enjoy your first expansive views of the mountain and surrounding landscapes, making this one of the most rewarding days for scenery so far. The route covers approximately 8 kilometers and usually takes around 5 to 6 hours, with a steady pace that helps support acclimatization. The open plateau and dramatic mountain views create a very different atmosphere compared to the dense forest of the previous day. This section of the Lemosho Route is known for its peaceful environment and striking natural beauty. Upon arrival at Shira Camp 1 at approximately 3,500 meters, you will rest, enjoy your meals, and prepare for the next stage of the climb.

Day 3 :Shira 1 Camp to Shira Camp 2

This is a shorter trekking day designed to support gradual acclimatization while allowing you to enjoy more of the beautiful Shira Plateau. After breakfast, you will continue walking across this vast and scenic high-altitude plateau, surrounded by open moorland, volcanic formations, and wide mountain views. The trail from Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2 covers approximately 7 kilometers and usually takes around 4 to 5 hours, making it a relatively relaxed hiking day. Because the altitude is increasing, this slower pace is very important for helping your body adjust properly before moving higher on the mountain. Along the way, you will enjoy excellent views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding wilderness, making this one of the most visually impressive parts of the Lemosho Route. The combination of a shorter distance and steady altitude gain makes this day highly beneficial for acclimatization. You will spend the night at Shira Camp 2 at approximately 3,850 meters.

Day 4 Shira Camp 2 to Lava Tower and descent to Barranco Camp

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days of the entire climb and plays a major role in increasing your summit success. After breakfast at Shira Camp 2, you will continue upward through the alpine desert zone toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic rock formation located at approximately 4,630 meters above sea level. The trail becomes more rugged and exposed, with sparse vegetation, rocky terrain, and dramatic high-altitude scenery. This climb allows your body to experience a much higher elevation before descending again, following the effective “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization method. Some climbers may begin to feel mild effects of altitude such as tiredness, shortness of breath, or a light headache, which is normal at this stage. After reaching Lava Tower and taking a break, you will descend to Barranco Camp at approximately 3,950 meters, where the air feels more comfortable and the scenery becomes greener again. This day covers around 10 kilometers and usually takes 6 to 8 hours, ending at the scenic Barranco Camp beneath the famous Barranco Wall.

Day 5 Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Today begins with one of the most exciting and memorable parts of the Lemosho Route, the climb up the Barranco Wall. After breakfast, you will tackle this steep but manageable rocky section with the support and guidance of your mountain guide. Although it may look intimidating from below, most climbers find it enjoyable and rewarding, especially because of the incredible views over the valleys, glaciers, and surrounding mountain ridges. Once you reach the top, the trail continues with scenic traverses through the alpine desert zone before descending slightly and then rising again toward Karanga Camp. This is a relatively short trekking day, covering approximately 5 kilometers and taking around 4 to 5 hours, which gives your body more time to recover and continue acclimatizing. The relaxed afternoon at camp provides a valuable chance to rest and conserve energy before moving higher toward summit base camp. You will spend the night at Karanga Camp at approximately 3,995 meters.

Day 6 : Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast, you will continue your climb toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt. This section of the route is relatively short, covering around 4 kilometers and usually taking 3 to 4 hours, but the altitude makes it important to keep a slow and steady pace. The trail passes through dry and rocky alpine desert terrain with very little vegetation, giving you a strong sense that you are now approaching the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro. As you move higher, the views become even more dramatic and the excitement of summit night begins to build. Once you arrive at Barafu Camp at approximately 4,673 meters, you will have time to rest, organize your summit gear, and prepare both physically and mentally for the demanding climb ahead. Your guides will also provide a detailed summit briefing to make sure you understand the timing, conditions, and strategy for the final ascent. After an early dinner, you will rest for a few hours before your midnight wake-up.

Day 7 :Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (summit) to Mweka Camp

This is summit day and the most challenging but also the most rewarding part of your Kilimanjaro adventure. Around midnight, you will wake up, have a light snack and hot drink, and begin your climb toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters above sea level. The ascent is slow, steep, and physically demanding as you move through the cold and dark arctic zone under the stars, guided carefully by your experienced mountain team. Reaching the summit around sunrise is an unforgettable achievement, rewarded with breathtaking views over glaciers, clouds, and the vast landscapes below. Standing at Uhuru Peak is the highlight of the trek and a deeply emotional moment for many climbers. After celebrating, taking photos, and enjoying your success, you will begin the long descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal before continuing further down to Mweka Camp at approximately 3,100 meters. This is a very long and demanding day, usually taking 10 to 15 hours in total, but it is also the most memorable part of the climb. Overnight will be at Mweka Camp

Day 8 : Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi

Your final day on the mountain begins after breakfast at Mweka Camp as you descend through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. This final section of the route is much easier than the summit day and offers a pleasant downhill walk through green forest, rich birdlife, and warmer air as you lose altitude. The trail covers around 10 kilometers and usually takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, giving you time to reflect on the incredible journey and your successful climb of Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you will complete the final park formalities and receive your summit certificate if you reached the top. Your driver will then meet you and transfer you back to Moshi, where a hot shower, comfortable rest, and celebration await. This marks the end of your unforgettable 8 Days Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro climbing experience.
